Difficulty

Is learning French hard?

French is not harder than your last abandoned hobby. It is differently annoying: you can read a menu before you can order from it. That gap is why people decide it is “hard” and quit.

Worth reading if

You are choosing a language, or you already started and feel slow.

  • You keep hearing French is impossible for English speakers
  • You can recognise words but cannot say them
  • You want an honest difficulty ranking, not a motivational poster

How we treat difficulty in a lesson

We correct what blocks meaning or what you keep repeating. We do not stop you on every gender. Fluency first, then polish.

  • Silence is allowed
  • English when it unblocks you
  • Homework that is short enough you will actually do it

What is actually hard

Spoken French glides. Liaison, swallowed vowels, the speed of a real answer. Gender is a tax, not a wall. The R is a few weeks of gentle drilling, not a talent.

The hard part is production: holding a sentence in your mouth while someone looks at you. That is a speaking skill. Grammar PDFs do not train it.

What is easier than the reputation

A huge amount of vocabulary looks like English. Word order is not Japanese. You do not need to be musical. Adults learn this language every year — including people who were “bad at school French.”

Why 1 on 1 makes it feel less hard

A tutor who waits, then gives you the line, then has you say it, turns “hard” into a sequence of small retries. Group classes skip the retry. Apps skip the person. If you can read French but not speak it, you already did the easy half.
