How long to learn French to B1
B1 is the level where French becomes a tool: you can handle most of a normal day, tell a story, and survive when the script runs out. It is a serious amateur’s goal, not a weekend.
B1 is the right target if
You want independence, not exam glory — or B1 is the paper you have to pass.
- You can already greet and stumble through A2 situations
- You need French for living, not just a holiday menu
- You want a timeline before you book weekly lessons
B1 with a tutor
Timed speaking if you have a date. Otherwise, situations that force you past A2 comfort.

What B1 actually asks
You can deal with travel, work small-talk, opinions in simple shape, and a conversation that is not fully under your control. DELF B1 includes an oral that punishes silence. Everyday B1 without the diploma is the same skill without the clock.
Time ranges
From a genuine A2, many adults need several months of weekly speaking to hold B1. From scratch, think closer to a year of consistent 1 on 1 plus homework — longer if lessons are occasional. Two hours of app a week will not get you there.
